Coach Snyder - Notes and Quotes

Posted Nov 4, 2009

MANHATTAN, Kan. - Following a tough loss this past Saturday, Head Coach Bill Snyder answered questions from the Media at his Weekly Press Conference.

Head Coach Bill Snyder On facing KU head coach Mark Mangino...

"The hardest part about it is the fact that he has a very fine football team. That's what makes it more complex than anything else.''

On playing against three consecutive Big 12 North opponents ...

"This is a year that we have 12 challenging games on our schedule, but these last three games just happen to be against very talented conference opponents. Every game is a challenge for us."

On keeping the team focused...

"We just keep telling them that we, maybe more than anyone else in the conference, control our own destiny. But that's really the only dialogue that we have had with them in terms of the success that the near future could possibly hold. We put a great deal of emphasis on taking things one day at a time."

On his knowledge on the team up to this point in the season...

"Well, I don't know everything about them yet; I haven't gotten to that point. There are still some things that I have yet to learn about them. I'm a work-in-progress just like everyone else."

On the overall attitude of the team...

"The overall attitude of our players isn't quite where I'd like it to be yet, but it's moving in the right direction. I think that their outlook has improved since the beginning of the spring as well as the beginning of the season. I think that we have made decent progress throughout the season. Everything is a learning experience for these young people and I think each week presents a new chance to learn. I think that each week also presents an opportunity to adjust our attitudes a little bit. As the season progresses, I think that they are getting a little closer to understanding the dynamics of achieving success."

On getting better every week...

"We, as a team, talk very frequently about not taking anything for granted, and we think that is a very important thing for our players to learn. If you go back and look, we put ourselves in a number of situations in which we were able to really learn something about ourselves. I think in those situations, it was important for our player to recognize that they have the opportunity to take something away with them and use it to become a better player and a better person."

"For example, against Texas Tech, even though we got beaten up pretty badly, there were still some things that we could take away from that game and use them to become a better team. But what you have to do is find the lesson and build on it."

On the outlook of the players after the loss to OU...

"I think that they were a little bit angry and I appreciate that. I think that's part of the grieving process. I think that if they didn't feel that way after a loss, then maybe that would've been a cause for concern. But I think now is the time to let the emotions from the previous game go. We need to focus on preparing for KU and I think that we are doing a good job so far this week."

On KU senior quarterback Todd Reesing...

"Todd is probably the most intelligent quarterback in the game today. He has a 4.0 GPA, he makes good decisions and he always seems to know where to go with the football. He stands in and finds the throwing lanes that they create for him. He has the ability get outside of the pocket and can run the ball pretty well. He is also a tough young guy. He throws the ball very well and he can put the ball just about wherever he wants. He has got some excellent receivers to throw to.

On KU wide receivers Dezmon Briscoe and Kerry Meier...

"They both have very good size. They have the ability to lay out for the ball; they can catch just about anything that is thrown their way. Kerry has as good of hands as you can find in college football. He has a knack to get himself into open spaces. It's hard to defend those guys. Their numbers that they are putting up this year are a testament to that."

On the importance of winning against KU ...

"Well, I'm quite certain that the vast majority of our players would like to bring the Governor's Cup back to Manhattan. This game is very important to all of our team, especially our players from Kansas. I think that this is a very significant game for every one involved on both sides."

Senior running back Keithen Valentine On playing Kansas...

"Everybody talks about it at the beginning of the season, it is here now and everybody was looking forward to it on the schedule and everyone is getting pumped up for it."

Senior quarterback Grant Gregory On Brandon Banks...

"He is one of the fastest people I have ever played with. He is always one missed tackle or one juke away from taking it to the house. When he gets the ball in the game he really shows what he can do."

On his performance against Oklahoma...

"I thought I was fairly accurate throwing the ball. I still missed a couple of reads and there were a couple of receivers that I did not hit but I feel that I improved a little last week."

Senior defensive lineman Jeffrey Fitzgerald On the Kansas offense...

"They are a very talented offensive team. They have a great quarterback, great skill position players and a pretty good offensive line."

On the defensive growth after the first quarter against Oklahoma...

"We just had that mentality that we did not want to have a repeat of Texas Tech, so we just continued to fight all game, not lay down and continue to grind throughout and hope something would happen."

Sophomore defensive back Tysyn Hartman On K-State/Kansas rivalry...

"I did not watch it real closely. Growing up K-State was known for football and KU was known for basketball but recently they have had a good run and we are looking to end that."
