Coach Snyder - Notes and Quotes

MANHATTAN, Kan. - Following a big win over Texas ATM, Head Coach Bill Snyder answered questions from the media at his Weekly Press Conference.

Head Coach Bill Snyder On getting the team ready after a big loss or a big win...

"To me, it's equally difficult regardless of which scenario presents itself. One might think that coming off the loss at Texas Tech would be very emotionally difficult. But in order to get ready for the next game you always have to keep things in perspective. You have to be careful about how you think about the previous game. You have to put the past behind you in order to focus on the next game. There's not really a lot of time to think about what happened the previous game because you have one day to process the emotions that come with either a win or a loss. So it is very important for myself and the rest of the coaching staff to keep our players focused on the task at hand.''

On building on the success against Texas A&M...

"If we play well this Saturday against Colorado, that shows me that we are making some improvements as a team and that's always been our goal. We want to get better every week. We have the opportunity on Saturday to show what kind of improvements we are making."

On the play of offensive lineman Nick Stringer...

"He has competed under some adverse conditions this year. I was so proud of him this past week because he had to line up across from Von Miller, who is an excellent player and has been dominating so far this season. But Nick stepped up and accepted the challenge and held his own very, very well. He is a very good leader and he does everything the right way. I've been very proud of him this season."

On the contribution of players who have changed positions this season ...

"You have what you have so you try to fit the pieces of the puzzle together as best you can. A lot of it is trial and error. We just have to find ways to plug the holes. I think what is important is that we have some young guys that want to be on the field and contribute to the success of this team. Those are the kind of guys that you want to try to find a spot for. So if somebody goes down or just isn't getting the job done, we have someone who we can plug in and see if that works for us. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. But we have got a number of young guys that have responded very well and it is important we have players on this team with that "team-first" mentality."

On the big-play ability of Brandon Banks...

"If the other 10 players on the field do what they're supposed to do, then that would provide Brandon the opportunity to have some success. But that depends on what the other guys on the field are doing and those guys have done a very nice job recently. Our kickoff return team has been getting better and better, so that has been a bright spot for our team. But again, Brandon is just one of 11 on the field and as talented as he is, those big plays don't happen without his teammates."

On the play of quarterback Grant Gregory...

"I think that he has made some significant improvements, but I also think that he has some issues that have to get cleaned up. Those issues may be associated with his inexperience in our system but that will come with time. But I thought that he played well against Texas A&M and hopefully he can continue to improve over the course of the season."

On facing Colorado quarterback Tyler Hansen...

"He has the ability to make big plays at any point in the game. He is very elusive. You might think that you have him trapped and before you know it he has slipped away and has made a big play. If you don't stick to your assignment, he is going to make you pay. He has a very good arm and with that he has the ability to scramble. The Colorado coaching staff doesn't want him to stay in the pocket. He has the ability to hurt you with both the run and the pass, so that presents numerous problems to a defense."

Freshman Wide Receiver/Quarterback Collin Klein On the Texas A&M game...

"It was definitely a step in the right direction. We have a lot of little things to clean up and we definitely have not arrived. Colorado is a very good team and we are going to have to be prepared for them."

On Coach Snyder's message during meetings...

"Keep playing, keep playing, keep playing. We just have to keep getting better at all facets. We were able to put together a good game, but there are still pieces that we have to put into the puzzle."

Senior Quarterback Grant Gregory On coming off the win against Texas A&M...

"The big thing about last week was responding to adversity, and now this week we will see how we will respond to playing well and having confidence. We are hoping to build off last week and play good this week."

On staying level-headed...

"It starts with Coach Snyder because he has been in every situation imaginable as a coach. So he is a very even-keeled person, and we try to feed off him in that aspect."

Senior Defensive Lineman Jeffrey Fitzgerald On Joseph Kassanavoid's switch to defensive line...

"I do not think he has played defensive line before, so he is still kind of learning. Once he really grabs the fundamentals of it, he should be a really good player on top of what he already is."

On last Saturday...
"All the hard work finally came through for us on Saturday. We continually worked on being a better team, especially on the defensive side."
