Hurricane Gustav hits Wildcats

Two Wildcats call southern Louisiana home with Blair Irvin coming from Patterson, and Keithen Valentine from Baton Rouge. Both communities are in line to feel the winds and gales of Hurricane Gustav as it makes land today. In addition, several Wildcats are continuing to feel storm of Ron Prince.

A pair of Kansas State Wildcats are spending their hours with one eye on game tape from the 45-6 victory over North Texas, and one eye on the weather channel.

Kansas State's Blair Irvin and Keithen Valentine call Louisiana home, and share a common concern about how family members are doing with Hurricane Gustav approaching land.

"We got blasted last time, and it looks like it's going to hit us again," said Irvin, who calls Patterson home.

"My family has already evacuated to a variety of places. They're going wherever they could get to the quickest." Patterson is located west of New Orleans and is a community still in the rebuilding stage after Hurricane Katrina three years ago.

"My dad's still in Alabama. That's where he went after Katrina, and he's still there," said the Wildcat defensive back, who led the team with six tackles. "They were just now rebuilding, and now this might be happening again."

Valentine had several family members in Manhattan Saturday night. Their plans are not to return to Baton Rouge until the storm hits, does its damage, and moves on.

"I wish they would all evacuate and come here," said Valentine, who rushed for 65 yards in his first KSU game. "My mom just had a baby (Paris) and I'd love to see her."

Valentine said most of damage for his family from Katrina was limited to wind and the loss of electricity for multiple days.
