Murphy Deal is Confirmed by Head Coach

Wildcat football coach Ron Prince hosted his first weekly press conference on Monday, confirming, but without detail, that Deon Murphy would indeed have a second junior season in 2008. Here's that note, PLUS OTHER INFORMATION from Monday's session, including Position Battles and Who Just Got a Scholarship!

It's a fact that Deon Murphy is a second-year junior with Kansas State in 2008, but no one is really saying how it all came about. Take note:

* "I honestly don't know what's going on. I haven't been a part of it," said Murphy.

* "I have no clue how this happened," said Kansas State coach Ron Prince. "It was the people that work in the compliance office who found it out and I was just notified."

* "I don't have any idea," said compliance chief David Flores.

The fact is that the 22-year-old Murphy, a native of Houston, enrolled at Hutchinson Community College in Kansas during the summer of 2005 as a part-time student.

He left after the summer and enrolled at some point – not even he has an answer as to when – at Blinn, again as a non-playing part-time student.

For what he says are personal reasons on and off the field, he left Blinn and found his way to Coffeyville Community College in 2006 where his NCAA five years to play four clock officially started.

In 2007, he enrolled at Kansas State and became the Big 12's Offensive Newcomer of the Year.

On the team going on without Jordy Nelson, Murphy said, "I think I was a leader with Jordy (last year), Even thought I knew what his next step was (NFL), I knew that it was my time to step up. I have a lot of receivers on the team that are looking up to me, and I'm proud of it."

KSU starting running back Keithen Valentine was one of nine Wildcats notified on Monday that they had been elevated from walk-on to scholarship status.

The others include: Chris Bamberger, Jack Reed, Heath Alexander, Adrian Stryker, D.J. Fulhage, Pete Yemm, Stephen Harrison and Gabe Gantz.

On being ready for the opener, Valentine, a transfer from Mississippi Delta Community College, said, "The other day we went through our pregame routine and I got goose bumps. I'm so excited. I can't wait to see the end result."

Prince offered this injury look for Saturday's opener with North Texas: Out: Josh Berard (LB) for the season; Kendrick Matthews (DB) for Saturday Doubtful: Dee Bell (RB), Penisini Liu (OL) Questionable: Alesana Alesana (OT), Deon Murphy (RB)

Murphy, however, said, "I'm good, I'm good. There's no question. I'll be out there."

On the 2-10 North Texas team that K-State will face Saturday at 6:05 p.m. at Bill Snyder Family Stadium, Prince said, "I'm very concerned with the game against North Texas. I think this is a very good team. From an offensive standpoint, they have a lot of fire power."
