Chance of a Lifetime

OL Kenneth Mayfield

Kenneth Mayfield, a 6-foot-4, 322-pound, offensive lineman, from Randallstown, Md., spent most of senior season on everyone's "Wait and See" list. Several schools liked Mayfield just enough to recruit him and keep him warm but only a few small schools liked him enough to offer a scholarship. That was until Ron Prince called Mayfield's coach earlier this month.

"Coach Prince actually called my coach (Evan Murray) and told him that Kansas State was interested in me." Kenneth Mayfield said.

"Right before Coach Prince called my coach, I had actually visited Maryland and I thought they were going to offer me a scholarship and that never happened.

"I visited Kansas State last weekend and loved it. The coaches are so full of energy and Coach Prince talked about getting the program back to the top of the mountain again. He wants to win championships.

"The players were real friendly also. They told me that the football players have each others back and that it's one big family.

"At the end of my visit, Coach Prince told me that Kansas State wanted to offer me a full scholarship. I immediately called my parents from Coach Prince's office and talked things over. My parents thought it was in my best interest to accept Coach Prince's offer. So I'm a Wildcat now."

Mayfield did receive scholarship offers from Morgan State, Temple and Toledo. He started playing football in high school and he started on the varsity the past two seasons at offensive and defensive tackle. Where will Mayfield line up for Kansas State?

"Coach Prince told me that I'll be starting out at offensive guard." Mayfield explained. "I could end up at tackle, we'll see. I'll be in Manhattan this summer. Coach Prince thinks I can come in and challenge for some playing time, so he wants me to come in and start working out with the team.

"That's just another thing that makes me want to go out and give it 110%. Coach Prince told me that he believes in me and that I have great potential. I'm grateful that Coach Prince is giving me this opportunity when a lot of schools that were telling me the same thing never came through and everything seemed to fall through the cracks."

Mayfield was an all-state selection this past season. He also letters in track. Kenneth was a standout at the Scout.com combine that was held last May in Akron, Ohio. He carries a 3.2 GPA in the classroom and scored a 1326 on his SAT.
