News hit Monday evening that Grandview, Missouri quarterback Josh Freeman, a US Army All-American selection, had switched his verbal commitment from Nebraska to newly annointed head coach Ron Prince and his Kansas State Wildcats. Scout.com's Josh Clark caught up with Ron Freeman, Josh's father, to get the latest on the situation...

Ever since news first arrived at KStateFans.com, Ron Prince has taken the Wildcat nation by storm. Prince has won Wildcat fans over through his words and performance.

Perhaps his most shining performance, thus far, as the Wildcats new head coach occurred this past weekend when he was able to sway four star quarterback Josh Freeman to make an official visit to Kansas State.

On the visit, Freeman let Prince know of his intentions to become a Kansas State Wildcat. Freeman will enroll in Kansas State classes beginning on January 12th, and will participate in spring drills.

I caught up with Josh's father, Ron Freeman, to discuss the switch in mindset from once being a Cornhusker to now being a Wildcat.

"As I told Coach (Scott) Downing at Nebraska, this wasn't due to any failure on their part," Freeman stated.

"Josh just felt there was a better opporunity at Kansas State, and it was such an unique situation with the opporunity that Coach Prince created when he arrived there. Nebraska did a very good job of recruiting Josh, and by all means, there nothing they did wrong."

There is no question that Ron Prince is the main reason Freeman now considers himself a Wildcat.

"Coach Prince impressed us from the instant we met him. He has a great depth of knowledge in the game of football, he is very articulate with 17 and 18-year-old kids, and he clearly was able to get his track record and what he has accomplished across to us, effectively," Freeman stated.

In looking at Coach Prince's track record, it was his days as Offensive Coordinator at the University of Virginia that were the most glaring.

"He coached Matt Schaub at Virginia, and was a big reason for his development," said the elder Freeman, a former player himself at Pittsburg State. "He used a west coast, pro-style offense at Virginia, and by Josh enrolling for the spring, he will have a chance to learn the new system as quickly as anybody currently on their roster."

For those who have commented they felt this decision was based solely on the race of Coach Prince, Mr. Freeman says that is the furthest thing from the truth.

"People trying to claim that are being shallow. Jay Norvell (Neb. Offensive Coord.) is also African-American," Freeman said.

"Kansas State offered a great combination in Josh being able to play for Coach Prince and the chance for early playing time. On Josh's visit there, he felt they had better facilities than what he expected. Many don't look at Kansas State as a well respected academic institution, but they have many rhodes and truman scholars, and are an outstanding academic university. Lastly, they are unique int the fact that the school's president takes the time to speak one on one with each recruit while on their visit."

Freeman said they had heard from Coach Prince somewhat while he was at Virginia.

"Last spring, we received more mail from Virginia than any other school. Coach Prince was aware of Josh out there, and kept an eye on him the entire time. Like I said, this was just a really unique opporunity," Freeman concluded.

For Wildcat fans, it was more of a blessing in disguise.
