Collin Klein Leaves Texans Camp

HOUSTON, Tx. - Collin Klein was arguably one of the best quarterbacks to ever play at Kansas State, if not the best. And yet he turned heads when he decided to work out exclusively at quarterback prior to last month's NFL Draft - not giving scouts and NFL personnel a chance to see him at another position, namely Tight End or Wide Receiver.

There are many talent scout types in the NFL who possibly prematurely noted that due to his size and overall athletic ability, Tight End was the appropriate position for Collin at the NFL level.

In college, Collin illustrated his power and ability to break tackles, often times running through defenders as well as away from them from the quarterback position in Coach Bill Snyder's Offense.

Klein, who finished his college career at Kansas State as a Heisman Finalist, never heard his name called and went undrafted in the NFL draft last month and did not even get a free agent contract. Enter the Houston Texans. Collin made his way to Houston, Texas after getting an invitation to training camp and the chance to try-out for the Texans.

"I don't want to get too far ahead of myself, but to watch how far the guy came in two and a half days; (he) really played probably his best day out here today........ He's found a way his whole career, and he's probably going to find a way this time, too" Texans Head Coach Gary Kubiak recently told NFL.com.

If anyone is qualified to judge quarterback talent in the NFL, it is Texans Head Coach Gary Kubiak. Kubiak played quarterback at Texas ATM before going on the NFL and a long career with the Denver Broncos, where he was the backup for Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway.

Training under the guidance of another former Broncos quarterback in Jake Plummer in an effort to prepare for the position at the NFL level, Collin has put in the work and his efforts have been noticed by Kubiak and company.

In the Texans, Klein has found a good landing spot with a team that is in need of an upgrade at the backup quarterback position behind Matt Schaub. Klein has the athletic ability to play in the NFL and the work ethic to continue to improve the question continues to be at quarterback.

Past that though, is the fact that the Texans love having athletes on their squad who can play multiple positions, much like the role James Casey filled last year for them. Casey, who left via free agency months ago to join the Eagles, played both Tight End and Fullback at times for the Texans.

The Texans had only two tight ends on the team at the time of the draft and in Kubiak's multiple offense and his penchant for two tight end sets, Klein could easily fit that role as well as play on special teams. Moreover, any injury or change at TE would leave the Texans in dire need of a replacement and currently there is a lack of proven depth at the position.

Klein left Houston this past Sunday without signing a contract. Did the gamble to workout exclusively at quarterback pay off? Only time will tell but he turned heads in Houston and in the NFL, you have to be prepared to play at any given moment when your opportunity arises.

Collin has already proven throughout his college career that he is up to any challenge and my guess is it is only a matter of time before he gets a chance to show what he can do in the NFL. There are far too many smart and savvy NFL types to let a talent and weapon like Klein sit on the sidelines for too long.
