MANHATTAN, Kan. - Kansas State persistence paid off in recruitment of Tyrone Ward. The 6-foot-2, 225-pound middle linebacker from City College of San Francisco committed to Kansas State today while on campus.

"The biggest reason for my commitment was coming to an understanding of where I wanted to be in life," said Ward. "By going to Kansas State I'll have a great opportunity there to play for Big 12 championships under Coach Snyder, who's just a great head coach. I really like Coach Cox as well, who'll be my position coach. He stayed in constant contact with me during the whole process, letting me know they wanted me there. I think it's going to be a good fit for me. Coach Cox let me know they had three starting linebackers graduate and there's going to be an opportunity for playing time right away."

Ward made 95 tackles on the 2012 season with two interceptions, a pick six, seven tackles for loss, and two sacks at middle linebacker. He's eager to join the Wildcats this summer to learn and compete.

"I love the defense Kansas State runs," Ward said. "It gives the linebackers a lot of responsibility. It forces them to make tackles and lead the defense. I love the blitz packages and the design packages like the nickel and the 4-3. It all falls into place with what we did at CCSF.

Originally from the Bay Area, Ward was a three year starter at Bishop O'Dowd High School in Oakland playing for NFL great Hardy Nickerson. After graduation in 2011, he played two seasons at CCSF and will be a two-for-three player when he arrives at Kansas State after his spring semester is complete. Ward will go to Manhattan in June with high expectations.

"The first thing I want to accomplish is another Big 12 championship," Ward said, who'll be given a good chance of replacing Arthur Brown at inside linebacker. "It's all about winning games and contributing in any way I can to help my team."

Ward was named All-NorCal Conference and to several JuCo All-American teams in 2012. He was recruited by Houston, Memphis, and UTSA, but said Kansas State was his only official offer.
