Valentine A Wildcat

MANHATTAN, Kan. - The Wildcats secured a commitment from Dayton Valentine over the weekend. The 6-foot-4, 240-pound tight end/h-back from Baldwin, Kan. calls himself a "typical Bill Snyder recruit" who has been "overlooked"by other Division 1 programs during the recruiting process.

"The opportunity to play close to home and in the Big 12 conference is a dream come true," said Dayton Valentine. "It was an offer to gray shirt, so I'll go to Kansas State next summer, go as a part-time student in the fall, and then full-time when I go on scholarship in January."

Valentine had built a good relationship with Co-offensive coordinator Dana Dimel from attending summer camps in Manhattan in his sophomore and junior years. It was during his official visit on campus this weekend that Valentine made his pledge to the coaching staff.

"The visit was great," Valentine shared. "I got to meet the guys and the coaches. They made me feel like family which helped me to feel at home. My player-host was Zach Nemechek. I'd been up previously to the Miami, (Texas) Tech, and Texas games. They were all great experiences. They kept recruiting me throughout the year and since the official went so well I decided to commit.

"Coach Dimel likes my versatility. I can move around and go in motion at h-back and I'm long and quick enough to play tight end."

Playing in a run-heavy offense for Baldwin Bulldogs, Valentine didn't have many receiving opportunities. His primary objective was blocking on offensive, but doubled on defense at end where he was an All-State selection (Kansas 4A).

"This season I was more of a force," explained Valentine. "I felt like my overall game improved with increased size and athleticism."

The Bulldogs finished the season 7-4 in the second round of the playoffs. In the spring, Valentine plans on defending his titles as state champion in the shot put and discuss. Valentine claims additional offers from Army and North Dakota State.
