Louisiana 5A Playoff Predictions Part I

Cameron Sims

For the third straight year, FOX Sports Next will preview and predict the exact score of every Louisiana playoff game (in all five classes). Read further for a preview of Ouachita/Haughton, Dutchtown/St. Amant, Archbishop Rummel/Lafayette and South Lafourche/Ruston. Will No. 9 Ouachita and star WR Cameron Sims get past the visiting Buccaneers of Haughton?

NO. 32 LAFAYETTE (5-5) AT NO. 1 ARCHBISHOP RUMMEL (9-0) Rummel reached the state finals in 2009, finishing as runner-up to West Monroe, and the Raiders are ready to make the short return trip to the Superdome. Head coach Jay Roth's team completed its fifth undefeated regular season during his 18-year tenure at the Metairie all-boys school with a 56-21 romp over Brother Martin in week 10, according to Mike Strom with nola.com. Against Brother Martin, senior Damian Williams -- the state's top-ranked quarterback -- ran for 181 yards and was precise with his passing (8-of-10, 167 yards, two TDs). Chris Ricks caught both of Williams' scoring strikes. Junior TB Keith Fulton has had a big year. Fulton had four TDs vs. Brother Martin.

Three-star FB Cethan Carter, ranked in the top ten nationally at his position, also reached the end zone. Senior OL Patrick Kliebert (pictured below) has great size (6-8, nearly 300 pounds).

Lafayette was up-and-down in 2012. Among the highs: a 35-28 win over No. 12 New Iberia in week two. Among the lows: a 51-7 loss to St. Amant in week three. The Lions hung 35 points on Barbe Friday but yielded 56. Aaron Woods (131 yards, two TDs vs. Barbe) and Waylon Simoneaux (82 yards) lead a two-pronged rushing attack...Rummel, 35-13

NO. 17 ST. AMANT (7-2) AT NO. 16 DUTCHTOWN (7-2) This is a rematch of the district opener in week six. Dutchtown won that game at home, 31-17. The first time around, Dutchtown rang up 246 yards on the ground and converted two third-quarter turnovers into TDs, according to Robin Fambrough with the Advocate. Senior QB Mason Nickens and junior RB Torrance Mosley each ran for Dutchtown scores. Trey Washington (16 carries, 78 yards; 7 catches, 73 yards) had an excellent effort for St. Amant, which has a defensive end (Nicholas Bickham) committed to Louisiana Tech. Three-star Dutchtown WR Shelby Christy is committed to Mississippi State...Dutchtown, 22-20

NO. 24 HAUGHTON (7-3) AT NO. 9 OUACHITA (8-2) Ouachita narrowly missed an upset bid in the second round last year at Carencro. The Lions, seeded 10th in 2011, held what appeared to be a comfortable fourth quarter lead over Carencro before Jalen Nixon and the Bears rallied to advance. Ouachita said goodbye to some terrific senior leadership from last year's team, in addition to losing five-star 2014 offensive tackle Cameron Robinson to transfer (now at West Monroe).

Regardless, the Lions continue to thrive with an offense that features deep threat FOX Sports Next 300 junior WR Cameron Sims. Head coach John Carr has another stellar WR in senior Taijuan Thomas, who carried twice for 83 yards and caught a touchdown pass in week one vs. Wossman. Ouachita's only losses are to undefeated Class 4A Neville and West Monroe. Haughton dropped three of its last five, but the Buccaneers have a capable signal-caller in Northwestern State commit James David Almond...Ouachita, 33-22

NO. 25 RUSTON (5-5) AT NO. 8 SOUTH LAFOURCHE (9-0) There's a great deal of excitement down south in the Cut Off/Galliano area, where South Lafourche put together a perfect regular season after posting a .500 mark last year. The Tarpons showed their mettle during a district game at New Iberia, building a 28-7 halftime lead and then holding off the Yellow Jackets in the fourth quarter to escape with a 28-26 victory.

South Lafourche does a nice job of mixing in the run and the pass. QB Colby Callais ran for a first-half TD vs. New Iberia and also threw a pair of touchdowns prior to intermission. Senior Treavon Evans caught five passes for 107 yards and intercepted two NISH passes. The Tarpons also have a pair of productive running backs, one of which is Jake Williams (TD jaunt vs. NISH).

Ruston, winners of three of its last four, has benefited from the play of transfer QB C.J. Gatlin. In last week's shutout (38-0) of Pineville, Alexio Williams-Hargrove, Jawaun Wright and Gatlin all ran for Ruston touchdowns...South Lafourche, 24-17
