Marquel Combs talks K-State
"I went to a prep school in Georgia for a semester after my senior year of high school," said Marquel Combs. "Then I went to Fort Scott (Community College) in Kansas. I wasn't there long before coming to Pierce. I'll still have two seasons of eligibility for the next three [years] after this one."
Combs started all 10 games in his first season with the Pierce Brahmas and made 34 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, three sacks, and a blocked field goal attempt. He was selected Second Team All-Pacific Conference at defensive line.
"At defensive tackle, I played the one [technique] and the zero," Combs said. "My get off, quickness, aggressiveness, and attitude are my biggest strengths. The JuCo experience has let me know more what my strong points and weak points are and focus on improving them before I get to the next level. Right now I'm working on increase my strength and speed, as well as focusing on improving on my technique and footwork."
Combs is one of Pierce's hottest prospects. He says he already has 20 offers with the latest one coming all the way from Rutgers in New Jersey.
"I've made visits to Ole Miss, Arkansas, and Memphis," Combs said. "With Kansas State, I really like how they build their team around junior college players. They usually bring in a lot of them and play them right away. I've been talking a lot with Coach Latimore about the program.
"What I'm really looking for is honesty. I'm hoping to find a good situation in a winning program where I can get some playing time. Location doesn't matter to me. I've been traveling so much since high school. I'm just looking for the best fit."
As he did at Hamilton High, Combs wears No. 92 for Pierce. The Brahmas play in the Southern California Football Association (SCFA) within the California Community College Athletic Association. Last year they finished with a 3-7 record, but Combs expects the Brahmas to have a "pretty solid" team this coming season.
