Just what all goes into a big-time contract like the one that Bruce Weber signed at Kansas State?
Plenty. Plenty of perks well above the lofty base salary.
The basics call for Weber’s five-year contract to extend through the 2016-17 basketball season. The compensation calls for $1.5 million for the 2012-13 season, with increases of $100,000 per year through the end of the contract, which would be $1.9 million for the 2016-17 season.
Among the bonuses that he can receive are based on a percent of his base salary: NIT bid or 10-8 Big 12 record, 4 percent; NCAA tournament, 8 percent; top three seed in Big 12 tournament, 12 percent; reaching the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament or winning the Big 12 championship, or Big 12 tournament, 16 percent; Elite Eight, 20 percent; Final Four, 24 percent; Top 10 ranking, 28 percent; and winning a national title, 32 percent. Percentages are not cumulative.
Weber would receive a bonus of $25,000 for a multi-year Academic Progress Rate above .960, and $50,000 for a multi-year APR of .980; a $50,000 bonus for a team graduation rate above the rate of the general student body (comparing a four-year average for both); a $25,000 bonus for being selected Big 12 Coach of the Year; a $50,000 bonus for being the National Coach of the Year.
Weber would also receive a lump sum of $500,000 if he completes the five-year contract. If he is terminated, he shall receive a $100,000 for each contract year completed.
If in the first two years of the contract –2012-13 and 2013-14 – should K-State win the Big 12 Tournament, receives a 1 or 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament, reach the Sweet 16, or Weber is named Big 12 or National Coach of the year, modifications and/or extensions to the contract can be made between March 15, 2014 to May 31, 2014.
Fringe benefits will include the school’s group insurance and retirement programs, the use of a courtesy car, and a vehicle stipend of $10,000 per year; plus full membership to the Manhattan Country Club and golfing privileges at the Colbert Hills Golf Course.
In addition, he will receive 10 men’s basketball tickets and four parking passes for each home game; six football tickets and one parking pass for each home game, six women’s basketball tickets and one parking pass, plus the option to receive six all-session tickets to the Big 12 basketball tournament.
On the other side of the contract, duties include attending a “reasonable number” of alumni, charitable and public appearances, which includes Catbacker events.
Should Weber be fined by the Big 12 Conference or NCAA for violation of the sportsmanship policy, the penalty shall be the sole and personal responsibility of the coach.
In addition, Weber will not be allowed to engage in any outside activities such as television, radio, clothing or shoe sponsorships. He is not allowed to use his name or image to promote any business enterprise that may conflict with the university.
Should K-State terminate Weber’s contract, he would receive either $2.5 million, or the sum of the total remaining base salary, whichever is less. The amount would be paid in 24 equal installments.
Should Weber opt to leave K-State before his contract is completed, he must pay K-State $1.5 million if prior to May 1, 2013, or $1 million if prior to May 1, 2014, or $500,000 if prior to May 1, 2016. The sum would be paid in 24 equal installments.
Should the coach not be able to complete his agreement due to disability, accident or illness, there would be no compensation owed by the coach.
Within the contract is the agreement that scheduling will be done jointly by the coach and athletic director.
